What Is ADHD Coaching?
ADHD coaching is a 1:1 conversation where we discuss what is going on in your life to help you learn more about yourself and take action toward your goals. In the process, we will examine your values, strengths, lifestyle, systems, and assumptions about yourself to identify why you are struggling and what can be done to overcome your current challenges.
At the center of ADHD coaching is an examination of ADHD symptoms (executive function issues) - inattention, impulsivity, emotional dysregulation, low and fluctuating motivation, procrastination, time blindness, inability to prioritize and organize yourself, etc. You will learn how to manage your most frequent and severe ADHD symptoms through practical skills, lifestyle adjustments, and personalized systems and solutions for each challenge.
Do You Need ADHD Coaching?
How useful ADHD coaching will be to you depends on your current circumstances. You can give it a shot if you are in one of the following situations:
You need accountability - You may know what you should do, but taking the first step is a whole different story. Many ADHD’ers report that they work best when there’s somebody who checks up on them. Procrastination, fluctuations in motivation, differences in energy levels from week to week, and a liking for shiny and novel ideas, goals, and projects can all stop us from achieving long-term objectives. Not everyone has close family and friends who can consistently check up on them or feel comfortable putting the burden on loved ones. ADHD coaching provides consistent supervision that will keep you on the right track.
You feel stuck and don’t know how to move forward - In ADHD coaching, you will be asked questions that you wouldn’t ask yourself. The primary purpose is to expand your knowledge and awareness of the options you have in front of you. You can think of it as a collaborative process where you are brainstorming and writing out ideas on a whiteboard. Except, the writing board is talking back by actively challenging your assumptions and encouraging you to think deeply about the matter. It’s easier to get unstuck when you get a fresh and different perspective.
You want to learn about your ADHD and explore your inner world - Untangling the complex web of ADHD symptoms, unprocessed emotions, self-deprecating thoughts, and unhealthy coping mechanisms can be a lot. Since there’s no immediate reward, it’s easy to procrastinate. Digging into your inner work can also be confusing, uncomfortable, and overwhelming, so you may feel a strong urge to avoid it. ADHD coaching makes showing up much easier and provides a safe and structured environment to make the process of self-exploration smoother.
Details:
Price - I currently do not charge for coaching. I have just gotten certified, so I’m more comfortable taking clients for free to compensate for my limited experience.
Format - The ADHD coaching session is 50 minutes over Google Meets. The standard is meeting once per week for three to six months, but the weekly frequency and total length of the coaching relationship can be negotiated depending on your needs.
Expectations between coaching sessions - The only expectation is for you to make some progress on the goals we’ve agreed upon. It counts even if you feel like it’s small and not enough. I don’t hand out homework, quizzes, or resources to go over between sessions unless explicitly requested.
Limitations - ADHD coaching is not a psychiatric intervention. I’m not qualified to prescribe medications, share opinions on medication use, and discuss diagnosis and treatment of serious mental health disorders that may co-occur with ADHD, like anxiety, OCD, depression, etc. I can help you to build skills and implement lifestyle adjustments that improve your overall mental health in the present, but direct treatment plans for severe conditions are beyond the scope of my practice.
